EIS lists 5 extant suborders, but Veron (2000) lists 6. 4 of Veron's 6 are the same as 4 in EIS (Fungiina, Faviina, Caryophylliina and Dendrophylliina). Veron has Archaeocoenlina, which I assume is equivalent to Astrocoeniina in EIS. Veron also has Meandriina.

Are suborders largely unused which is why there is inconsistancy?

I know Charlie has introduced a number of new families in Corals of the World (e.g. Euphyliidae and even has this new family in a different suborder than Caryophyliidae). Maybe he's trying to shake up the taxonomy.

Eric,
The suborders were mentioned in the chart on the geological history of the suborders and families. The one you scanned for the lecture.

You got it - he has shaken things up a LOT. The systematics in the book will not be official until they are published as monographs in a journal and the nomenclature approved by the convention.

What page are you on for that bit on suborders...let me check it out and find out what's up

Eric
