looks good Matt, I see some old school tools in those shots :)

I like the mitered corners, are you going to attach the old and new pieces together? also make sure you make some holes for the fans, they work best that way ;) jk

thanks guys i am trying to figure out whether i should screw the one into the other. as it stands now on each corner there is approximately 2" of wood holding it in place so that it cannot fall either way. i also cut the wholes for the fans johnathan. will update later with pics. and the fans are on sale at Dr f&S for this month let me know and i could order them for you. i did hit a roadblock though regarding the staining. i did it red mahogany. DAMN!! the wood isnt mahogany so it turned brown. now i have to go find another stain to bring out the red to match the rest of the aquarium . LOL . any suggestions for the stain would greatly be appreciated
thanks
matt

Matching a stain is near impossible. Should have stained a small peice first as a test. Also, was the wood you used "clear pine"? This wood accepts stain very well. Before staining, you should always sand, steel wool, clean with denatured alcohol, then condition the wood with BIX wood conditioner. This allows the clear pine to absorb the stain evenly. In some cases can change color.
Bringing that color back to Red is almost impossible. I hate to tell you that. Vigorus sanding with belt sander. Removing most of the brown. Then cleaning with denatured alocohol. Bix, then finding a Minwax DEEP Red stain, maybe mixed with an Ipswitch Pine 30% might achieve the original "Red Mohogany" color. Very light coats with a cheap sponge brush, or an old terry cloth rag.

Hope I helped.

yeah that staining thing blows!!:joke: no it really does though. i did the red mahogany and then had HD mix a red and put it together with a shine afterwards it came pretty close, you were right on the money about never getting it the same though. thanks i appreciate the advice
