Hello,
I just read Rob Toonen's article on aquarium invertebrates
in this month's issue of Advanced Aquarist about the nutritional
value of certain foods. The last paragraph touch's on macroalgae
and green vegetables. For those of you who are interested in how
much nutrition is available in these foods can go the USDA web
site and use their search. Go to:<www.nal.usda.gov> and follow
the links.
But as Rob stated, there is insufficient data to indicate if the
nutrients in green vegetables are available to fish due to their
different stomachs and digestive systems. So use the data on the
USDA site as a comparison to other vegetables and to the one type
of seaweed which is called "Seaweed, agar, dried". To make your
search faster; here are the NDB numbers of some vegetables that
marine aquarist's have used. You can also type in the name of the
vegetable if you wish.
For seaweed: 11663
For asparagus: 11011
For broccoli: 11090
For spinich: 11457
For lettuce: 11251
You will notice that the dried agar seaweed contains no vitamin C.
I think this is the same type we been feeding our fish. I find
this strange unless the commercial processing of the algae extracts
the vitamin or certain types of macroalgae do not have it.
There is no submit button, so just hit the "enter key" and the search
will start. l
