See the link I attached. It tells you about the sense of "false certainty" that mercury thermometers give. I don't remember where else I've read it. I had 2 thermometers on my tank - one mercury, and one digital - and they always differed by 2-4 degrees! That's why I bought the lab thermometer and used it a lot. When you're doing water changes, and if you have more than one tank, it is much preferable to have a mobile thermometer that you can immerse in different bodies of water than a static, attached to the tank wall thermometer. Mercury are hard to see, and can't give +/- 0.5 F accuracy.
